Originally built towards the end of the 13th century on a former Gallo-Roman site, the fortified house of Faugas was restored and expandedduring the 16th century with a low-wing, a staircase tower and two corner towers.
Later, the castle went through other major transformations, including the reconstruction of its agricultural parts in the 18th century. The estate consists of a group of three buildings, forming an open U-shaped courtyard towards the chateau. Many carved decorations and a dovecote joined to one of the towers complete the property. Unfortunately, the 20th century has witnessed the destruction of one of the corner towers. Over the course of its history, the castle belonged to several key figures in the history of the Gironde region, including the Duke of Épernon during the 17th century and the Marquis d’Alon in the 18th century.
The Château Faugas proudly stands with three towers and an old keep from which you can enjoy an extraordinary panorama of this hilly region situated on the right bank of the river Garonne. Continuing a long-established tradition, this family estate of 15 hectares is divided into 13 hectares for reds and 2 hectares for whites. Planted on a clay-limestone soil, the vineyard benefits from an ideal exposure with a south facing hillside. The land is planted with noble grape varieties such as Semillon and Sauvignon for the white wines, Merlot, Cabernet and Cabernet franc for the red wines. The vines are, on average, 30 years old for red and 35 years old for white.
The Chateau is a family estate that is committed to perpetuating a tradition of quality and excellence. For over a century, this Chateau has belonged to the family Thial de Bordenave-Berckmans.
At the head of the castle, Mrs. Marie-Pascale Berckmans and by her side, her nephew, Mr. Hugues Hardy.
“The Château Faugas, beautifully South facing, (…) produces one of the best wines of the region”
Le Feret, 1874Awarded multiple times at international competitions, the Château Faugas wines combines the power and richness of aromas. The full-bodied, racy, tannic red wines are great for ageing. The white wines, high in alcohol, with a renowned bouquet and finesse are a “wonderful sweet white”.
Vinified and matured traditionally, the wines of Château Faugas are that which had Montaigne saying: “Wine is a gift from God… which gives back gaiety to men and restores youth to the old.”
With over 15 years of experience in sustainable agriculture, we do not use chemical herbicides, we work the soil and control grass growing.
